Biography
James M. Okapal is a Professor Philosophy at Missouri Western State University. He received his BA from Ohio State University, his MA from Bowling Green State University, and his PhD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville all in the field of moral philosophy. He teaches undergraduate courses in ethics, a graduate level course The Foundations of Professional Ethics, and his research specializes in the intersection of theoretical and applied ethics with literature. He has over 15 publications, including an overview of the principles of bioethics regularly used by MOSAI as introductory material for their ethics committee. In addition, he has 40 presentations including several to professional organizations such as MOSAIC Healthcare Systems, Clay County Public Health, and the Missouri Department of Transportation. He has been a member of the MOSAIC Ethics Board for most of the past 17 years and recently became a member of the Ethics Committee of the National Pop Culture Association. He was recently awarded the Dr. James V. Mehl Award for Outstanding Faculty Scholarship at Missouri Western State University.
February 28, 2024: Ethical Case Studies in Accounting
This presentation will introduce the audience to a method for reflecting on ethical problems encountered in a professional setting. The method involves identifying moral problems, relevant stakeholders and their interests, moral values associated with those interests, and possible morally acceptable resolutions to those problems.
